The convention is for insulin doses to be expressed as ‘units’.

There are various factors, such as a persons weight or kidney function, that can influence how sensitive/responsive (?) they are to insulin. This can therefore inform the insulin dose that they need to administer. Insulin doses are likely to vary from person to person. The doses may even vary in the same person under different circumstances, such as ill health, pregnancy, ageing and marked changes in weight. No two people are the same!

It is important where possible to encourage those who use insulin to take ownership and be aware of which and how much insulin they need and when. It is also important to recognise that insulin doses may need adjustment from time to time if glucose levels are persistently uncontrolled. External factors that are affecting glucose control should always be considered, rather than just adjusting the insulin doses in isolation.
