Aside from promoting glucose uptake into the body to provide energy, insulin is also an anabolic hormone (i.e. it promotes storage).

In uncontrolled diabetes, excess glucose is lost in the urine. Once diabetes control is improved using insulin, the body will excrete less glucose in the urine.

As a result, this additional retained glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver or as fat and this can contribute to weight gain.
