Summary of Week 3
What have we learned?
Week 3 has focused on the sand fly vector of visceral leishmaniasis, looking at how to identify whether it is transmitting VL, how it feeds, where it lives and the opportunities and tools for its control. We have also heard from experts in the field on the practicalities of deploying vector control measures. You have also learnt that VL vector control programmes need to be dynamic and responsive to both new knowledge about the vector and to the impact of larger factors such as climate change and human migration.
What will we head towards now?
The fourth and final week will show how the activities covered in the previous weeks contribute to a programme for VL control. Week 4 will also look at how a control programme can be maintained and sustained, especially if it is successful in reducing VL to elimination levels and whether a post-elimination scenario is a realistic possibility.
