What will we learn?
This week our focus is thinking about the ways in which we might intervene in the lives of children and young people who are experiencing vulnerability and risk. After completing this week you will begin to feel comfortable engaging with the following questions:
- What traditions of child care practice/intervention exist and what are some of their key characteristics?
- What is the role of love within caring for vulnerable children and what does this mean for professional boundaries?
- How can we think about using activities and promoting resilience as we work with vulnerable children?
- How can we safely challenge and resist pressure to be increasingly risk averse?
To achieve this you will listen to talks introducing you to the key concepts involved in different traditions of child care practice and issues concerning risk averse practice. You will read about different traditions of practice and how we can begin to use these to deliver care which provides love and promotes resilience. By doing this you will be able to reflect upon the challenges that are presented by the predominance in some circles of risk avoidance and how practitioners can overcome this.
