And by interventions, we mean the way in which services, be they statutory or non-statutory, may become involved in the lives of children and young people who are experiencing vulnerability and risk. We'll consider some of the different traditions of practice that exist ranging from social work, to community work, youth work, and from further afield, traditions such as social pedagogy and child and youth care. We'll think in more detail about some of the key characteristics of some of these different traditions of practice.

Within this, we will think about processes such as love, resilience, and use of activities, and how these relate to some of the key characteristics of practice that exist and inform the way in which we try to interact and intervene with vulnerable children and young people. But we'll also reflect on some of the challenges that exist when we try to be creative and imaginative in our practice and some of the barriers that we can face in relation to issues of risk and risk aversion that exist in society today.

Welcome to week 4

In week 4 you will begin to learn about the ways in which we might intervene in the lives of children and young people who are experiencing vulnerability and risk.

You’ll begin to think about the different traditions of practice and interventions that exist in different parts of the world. From Scotland and the UK we will consider material focusing on social work, youth work and residential child care. From overseas you will be introduced to the approaches of social pedagogy and child and youth care.

Drawing on the key characteristics of different approaches, we will think about what this means for how we conceptualise the act of caring for children and young people. This will involve considering the concepts of resilience, love and the type of activities we use to engage with children and young people as a means of intervening and providing services.

Within this we will also reflect upon some of the challenges that exist when we try to be creative in how we provide care and ‘love’ for vulnerable children and young people within a culture where issues of risk aversion can often be to the fore.
