Delayed projects, huge overspending, safety concerns and courtroom battles between client and contractor, are widespread. In 2002, work started on the new £750 million National Football Stadium in London. Much public excitement and media scrutiny surrounded how Wembley would be re-imagined. But the new stadium project was beset by problems. Major delays, a huge overspend, compensation claims and a construction worker losing his life, caused public uproar and when Wembley finally opened in 2007, the project was delivered 18 months late and came in at £250 million over-budget. Critically the client and the contractor were not BIM compliant.

This week we will be discussing how BIM is aiming to revolutionise the construction industry. Considering all the issues highlighted, can BIM hit the target of being a catalyst of change and prevent more Wembley own goals?

Welcome to the course

Welcome to the second short course of the Building Information Management Foundation module.

In the video above Danny Mcgough, the course leader, welcomes you to the course and describes some of the widespread problems that occur in the AEC industry. He highlights this using the construction of Wembley, the UK national stadium, as an example. The project was beset by problems including:

  • major delays

  • a huge overspend

  • compensation claims

  • the loss of life of a construction worker

The companies responsible were not BIM compliant and so problems in the development were not identified early, when they could have been mitigated for. (Hull 2015)

This week you will:

  • be introduced to the BRE-Academy professional qualification

  • explore the terminology used around BIM by professionals in the industry

  • identify the key issues that have led to the development of BIM

Your Lead Educator on this course is Danny McGough who is the Course Director for MSc Construction and BIM at Coventry University. His areas of expertise are in BIM, performance modelling and construction technology.
