Knowing when and why maternal deaths occur is key to development of strategies to reduce maternal mortality.

The timing of maternal death is therefore critical, and the video considers potential complications and their timescales in more detail. At the same time, strategies must be context-specific, since the leading causes of maternal deaths vary greatly between high- and low- and middle-income countries. There are also differences within countries and by age group. Strategies that are effective in one location may be less so in another.
