Women’s Health After Motherhood: A Global Story

Thank you for joining us on this for the Women’s Health After Motherhood course, and we hope you have learned something new to support your health and wellbeing after motherhood.

We would like to remind you of a word we mentioned in Week 1:

Thrive

At the start of this course, we told you about one woman’s story and how, for several years, she put up with health problems that left her feeling miserable in all aspects of her life.

It was her story that inspired the MAMMI study, and what we learnt from the women taking part was that this woman was not alone: many of them suffered in silence, often because they did not know what was and was not normal, what they could do about these health problems, and when and how to ask for professional help. Women told us that after they became mothers, the maternity and other health services focused on the baby’s health, not theirs.

Their stories, and their need for reliable, trustworthy information, are the reason why this Women’s Health After Motherhood (WHAM) course was developed. Women told us to ‘share the findings’, to ‘get the message out to all women’ and to ‘break the silence’ around these health problems.

Together with women, we designed this course so that women, partners and healthcare professionals could have a reliable resource of information on maternal health. We want women to become better informed about the health and health challenges that can occur after birth, so that they can take positive action and enjoy motherhood in optimal health.

Our goal was to help you, and women throughout the world, become informed and empowered so that you can thrive during and after motherhood, and for life.

Our final key message for you is this: don’t just exist, don’t put up with health problems, don’t suffer in silence – being a woman and becoming a mother is about thriving, not just surviving.
