This twelve-week ExpertTrack from The Open University will deepen your understanding of the people, places, and traditions of Germany and other countries where German is spoken, helping you gain the knowledge to take your language skills to the next level.
You’ll embark on a virtual journey through various regions of German-speaking countries and learn about life in cities and towns, focussing in particular on Hamburg in the north of Germany and Passau in the south. You’ll develop your language skills to explore the geography and landscapes of these areas, and discover their festivals and traditions.
Through engaging case studies, you’ll get to know a variety of people who will share their day-to-day lives and insights, offering a more in-depth understanding of the countries in which German is spoken.
Improve your knowledge of German pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary
On this ExpertTrack, you’ll build on your beginner level skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as perfecting your grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
A mixture of video, audio and written texts will help you discover how to talk about your own life and experiences. You’ll gain skills to communicate your ideas and reflect on cultures of German-speaking countries to develop your intercultural awareness and communication skills.
Put your German language skills into practice
Throughout the courses, you’ll consolidate your learning by engaging in written conversation with other learners, in both German and English, sharing study tips and contributing to debates. This will cement your learning and give you the confidence to use your newly developed skills in the real world.
By the end of this ExpertTrack, you’ll have the skills to become an independent and competent user of German, having gained a wider knowledge of the geography, landscapes, and festivals of German-speaking countries.

Experience required
You should have a good basic knowledge of German and be at Level A2 or above in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). To ensure success, you should be able to:
- Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment)
- Communicate routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters
- Describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need
