To mark the bicentenary of Waterloo, is there a memorial near you?
As we approach the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo later this week, FutureLearners around the world have been sharing pictures of memorials and landmarks near them, which commemorate it and its two key figures – Wellington and Napoleon.

The learners are all taking the University of Southampton’s free online course, “Wellington and the Battle of Waterloo.” As lead educator, Chris Woolgar, said in his blog post about the anniversary:
“One of our themes is the commemoration of Waterloo and its heroes. Memories of this war are all around us. There can be few towns in Britain that do not have a Duke of Wellington pub, or Waterloo Arms, or memorials or streets named after the occasion.”
So far, we’ve seen photos come in from across the world – from Alaska to New Zealand – with everything from blocks of flats to shopping malls commemorating the Battle or Wellington’s role in it.

Is there a memorial near you? Tell us about it in the comments below or on social media using #FLwellington. Want to know more about Waterloo? Join the free online course, “Wellington and the Battle of Waterloo,” now – it runs until Sunday 28 June.
