The Product Owner role is demanding and the individual serving in this capacity is a key project stakeholder. This person provides a clear vision of the project and determines the overall direction the project takes.

The Product Owner is primarily responsible for prioritizing and communicating all work to the team to meet business needs.

Here are the primary duties of the Product Owner:

  • Defines Epics and User Stories created for the development team; other team members may assist
  • Maintains the Product Backlog by developing, prioritizing, and managing it.
  • Communicates with the team letting members know about project features, priorities, and scope for product development cycles
  • Remains available to the team and is ready to answer team questions or concerns during the fast-paced sprints
  • Attends events such as Sprint Planning, Review, Backlog Grooming, and Sprint.
  • Retrospective (Daily Stand-ups optional).

Now that you have a better understanding of the Product Owner’s responsibilities, let’s move on to the next step where we learn about the Scrum Masters responsibilities.
