Scrum Master responsibilities

Scrum Masters have very different skill sets than Product Owners. They are problem solvers and attempt to support teams at all times.

Scrum Masters have very different skill sets than Product Owners. They are problem solvers and attempt to support teams at all times.

They continually work to remove impediments that may slow down the team. Encouragement and empathy are nice qualities to have as a Scrum Master for proper engagement with the team.

Here are the primary duties of the Scrum Master:

  • Removes obstacles by identifying, tracking, and removing impediments
  • Supports the Product Owner by ensuring that the product backlog remains prioritized and contains all functionality desired for the product
  • Serves as a coach by educating and mentoring both team members and the Product Owner on Scrum principles and practices that they may not yet have adopted or understood
  • Facilitates scrum meetings including daily stand-ups, Sprint Planning, Sprint Retrospectives, and Demonstrations
  • Provides coordination by overseeing the entire Scrum process and encouraging team members to be efficient and creative
  • Encourages, facilitates, and assists with direct communication between the Product Owner and the Scrum Team.
