Previously, you saw an overview of Power BI and how you can use it to connect to data and create a report. In this section, you will see how you can transform data in Power BI Desktop.

Data transformation is the first step in any data analysis project. The format of your data will determine how much transformation needs to take place. You may have structured data that needs very little transformation, or you have may have data that needs a lot of work before you can begin to model it.

Power BI Desktop is where you will spend most of your time when working on BI projects. It can support you by enabling you to:

  • cleanse and tidy data
  • format data
  • create data relationships
  • analyse data
  • visualise data.
