Whale jumping out of water
This week you examine how digital technologies can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable relationship with the environment.

You delve into the following SDGs:

Sustainable Development Goal icon for SDG12 Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
Sustainable Development Goal icon for SDG13 Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
Sustainable Development Goal icon for SDG14 Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
Sustainable Development Goal icon for SDG15 Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

Is there an inherent contradiction in turning to ICTs for sustainability solutions, given that ICTs are big carbon polluters? You will consider a case study of how the carbon footprint of ICTs can be reduced, how a search engine can contribute to climate action, how blockchain is used to maintain fish stocks, and how crowdsourced data and digital mapping are used to stop deforestation.
