Heart of Agile and Modern Agile

*Heart of Agile* and *Modern Agile* both came into existence because the creators looked to what has become of Agile since 2001.

Heart of Agile and Modern Agile both came into existence because the creators looked to what has become of Agile since 2001.

Heart of Agile

Heart of Agile was developed by Alistair Cockburn in response to some of the more complex approaches to Agile that were in use.

Dr. Cockburn states, “Agile has become overly decorated. Let’s scrape away those decorations for a minute and get back to the heart of Agile.”
Heart of Agile is based on four words:

  • Collaborate: Work closely with others and communicate often.
  • Deliver: Start with small releases.
  • Reflect: Think about what you’ve learned.
  • Improve: Make improvements to how you deliver.

Modern Agile

Modern Agile is another simplified approach that was developed more recently by Joshua Kerievsky.
Kerievsky believes mainstream Agile is “drowning in a bloated tangle of enterprise tools, scaling frameworks, and questionable certificates that yield more bureaucracy than results.”
Modern Agile is based on four principles:

  • Make people awesome.
  • Make safety a prerequisite.
  • Experiment and learn rapidly.
  • Deliver value continuously.
