Educators for the week

Educators for the Week - Karen Ousey, Rose Cooper, and Finn Gottrup.
6.2
Hello, I’m Karen Ousey, a professor of skin integrity at the University of Huddersfield in the United Kingdom, and I’m delighted to be part of the education team for this module. There are a team of us, so you’ll be seeing different people as you progress through the course. However, my background is tissue viability and wound infection. I’m also chair of the International Wound Infection Institute. So I’m very passionate about antimicrobial stewardship. And I’m really looking forward to helping you throughout this course. Hello, I’m Rose Cooper. I’m a microbiologist, and I qualified about 50 years ago. And I spent most of my professional life teaching microbiology.

I’ve worked with EWMA writing position documents for about 15 years, and I’ve been involved in the antimicrobial stewardship programme, which was set up between EWMA and the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy five years ago. You’ve probably heard about the problems of antimicrobial resistance, and I’ve been looking into those for quite some time and particularly looking at alternative agents. My role in this module is to show you the rationale for antimicrobial stewardship, which is basically about using antimicrobial agents in a responsible way to protect their use in the future. My name is Finn Gottrup. I’m coming from Copenhagen Wound Healing Centre in Copenhagen, Denmark. My background is I’m a medical doctor, and I’m a surgical gastroenterologist.

And I’m a professor of surgery. I have been part of EWMA since it started in 1991, and I have been past president, past recorder, and many years in council. My interest in the wound area has primarily focused on the wound healing process and development of infection, and my relation to this course is that I’m giving a short introduction for EWMA, I’m giving a short introduction about what wound management is, and I am giving examples for how you can treat wounds and infections.

In this video, Professor Karen Ousey, Professor Rose Cooper, and Professor Finn Gottrup introduce themselves. They will guide you through the topics of week 1 which will cover the following main areas:

  • Introduction to wound management
  • The rationale for wound management

The overall lead for the course is Professor Karen Ousey, Professor of Skin Integrity and Director for the Institute of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention at the University of Huddersfield. She is a member of NHS National Wound Care Strategy, chair of the International Wound Infection Institute, past academic editor for Wounds UK and is an editorial board member for the Journal of Wound Care.

Professor Rose Cooper began to investigate the microbiology of wounds in 1992, which led to an interest in the efficacy of topical antimicrobial agents. She has also been investigating the potential of bacteria recovered from wounds to form biofilms and searching for ways to limit biofilm formation. She was a Professor of Microbiology at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Rose has contributed to several books, some television and radio programmes and has been an invited speaker at conferences in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Malaysia, Slovenia, Turkey and the USA.

Professor Finn Gottrup is a specialist in anatomy, general surgery and surgical gastroenterology. He is Professor of Surgery at the University of Southern Denmark. He is the founding member and former president of EWMA and European Tissue Repair Society (ETRS). In 1991, Prof. Gottrup was awarded the world’s first professorship in wound healing and he became Professor of Surgery at the University of Southern Denmark in 2003. Finn has published extensively and been an invited speaker at conferences all over the world in relation to wound healing, infection, and how to organise wound management.
