Xiongnu – a nomadic confederation that formed during the late 3rd century BCE. The name derives from old Chinese transcripts and has several versions, including Hunnu in Mongolia.

Textual records – old writings that were produced at the same time or after the events.

Material record – tangible remains of past events and cultures. These include artifacts, archaeological sites, and ecofacts (bones, soils, seeds, etc.)
