Get ideas for where to find out more about programming, and what to do to develop your skills further.

This course is just a taster of what you can do with programming skills. If you want to learn more and develop your skills further there are a multitude of options available.

Share your game with others

You can upload your game (using an APK file) to the Google Play Store or other app marketplaces in order to share it with friends, family and other people around the world! You can also share the game by sending people the app via email or bluetooth.
How this code is licensed: The code that you have received in this course is covered by an open source license – specifically GPLv3 (http://www.gnu.org/licenses). That means the changes you make to the code MUST be made available as open source software under GPLv3 (or later) as well. Therefore, if you upload a game you HAVE TO provide its source online somewhere. You can use Google Code or GitHub to do this for free. However, if you want to publish your game without doing this, please fill in our form. Have the following information ready:
  • some screen shots of your game (at least 3 good quality images)
  • provide a link where your game can be downloaded

Begin Robotics
If you’d like to find out more but worried that you don’t have Hawkins’ brain, or an advanced qualification in cybernetics, Begin Robotics is the FutureLearn course for you! We’re not planning to sit you down with a soldering iron, but we will introduce you to the basics of robot design through a series of simulations that will have you ‘test driving’ an Eric – our very own University of Reading mobile robot!
You might even like to try a different online course from the University of Reading such as Big Data and the Environment which will be starting on 16 April. Or join us for the next run of Begin Programming.
There’s a wide range of online courses and resources available to help you to develop your programming skills, for example, on the FutureLearn platform or these Android application development videos on YouTube. This playlist comprises of short tutorials that will help you to take your Android development skills further.

Beyond online courses

Now that you’ve mastered some essentials, why not study computer science at university? The University of Reading offers a BSc Computer Science, and your completion of this online course and others will stand you in good stead to study the subject at undergraduate level.
