As the global population grows, food production must increase to meet rising demands. However, due to climate change and rising temperatures, intensifying traditional agriculture may soon no longer be a viable option.

In Zanzibar, seaweed farming is a vital source of income, especially for women. Around 80% of the 25,000 seaweed farmers in Zanzibar are women. These women wade into the shallow coastal waters every morning to plant and harvest seaweed, which is used in various products like cosmetics and food additives.

Seaweed farming has significantly improved the economic status of many Zanzibari women, providing them with a stable income and elevating their role in the community. However, the work is not without challenges. Rising ocean temperatures and incidence of diseases occuring in seaweed farms have affected seaweed yields.

This is an additional video, hosted on YouTube.

After watching the video, use the comments section below to discuss the health and safety challenges these women face as seaweed farmers. Can their working conditions somehow be improved to ensure their safety and well-being?
