The employer bears the responsibility of safeguarding workers against the adverse effects of hand-arm vibration exposure. However, workers can contribute by engaging with their employer to explore alternative methods of performing tasks that do not involve the use of vibrating tools and machines.

If alternative methods are not feasible, consider the following steps that can help reduce the risk of HAVS and contribute to a safer work environment:

  • Request the use of appropriate low-vibration tools.
  • Always utilize the correct tool for each task to expedite work and minimize exposure to hand-arm vibration.
  • Prior to use, inspect tools to ensure they are properly maintained and repaired, as faulty or worn tools can increase vibration.
  • Maintain sharpness of cutting tools to optimize efficiency.
  • Limit continuous tool usage by interspersing tasks with breaks.
  • Minimize excessive gripping or force applied to tools or workpieces.
  • In cold areas: Store tools to prevent handles from becoming excessively cold.

Furthermore, to enhance blood circulation, workers should consider reducing or quitting smoking, as smoking hampers blood flow. Finger massage and exercises during work breaks can also aid circulation. In colder environments, workers should prioritize staying warm and dry by wearing appropriate gear such as gloves, hats, waterproof clothing, and utilizing heating pads when available.
