PROFESSOR RAINA MACINTYRE: So finally, just to finish up with the classification of bioterrorism agents. Now, this originates from the Cold War era. They’re classified as A, B, and C. A is essentially the agents are thought to be the most dangerous, the highest impact. And that includes smallpox, anthrax, plague, and viral hemorrhagic fevers, such as Ebola. Category B are one step down from the category A agents and includes a range of diseases, such as brucellosis, Q Fever, salmonella, staphylococcus. And then, Category C is kind of an open category, which leaves it open to include new agents or agents that can be used for mass dissemination that are not known about at the time.
In this step, Professor MacIntyre provides an introduction into the different categories of biological agents that could be used in bioterrorism incidents. Important historical and current examples of high risk biological agents are provided and discussed.
