To design blended learning effectively, it is crucial to understand something about the the art of teaching, otherwise known as pedagogy! In Towards a Comparative Pedagogy, Alexander (2009: 5) defines this important concept as:

“The observable act of teaching together with its attendant discourse of educational theories, values, evidence and justifications. It is what one needs to know, and the skills one needs to command, in order to make and justify the many different kinds of decisions of which teaching is constituted.”

The appeal of Alexander’s definition is that it separates pedagogy into art on the one hand, and the ideas that inform teachers’ creativity on the other. It is to these, the informing ideas, that we now turn our attention.
