This paper surveys 15 countries to explore orientations towards basic/applied research. Findings contradict claims of diminishing focus on basic research, revealing its continued significance. However, variations exist across countries and fields. Most academics engage in a mix of basic/applied research, with a prevalence of applied orientation. Specialists in basic research face limited external funding and less emphasis on applied research. They hold weaker obligations to apply knowledge to societal problems.
