Through two examples, we can better understand the differences between applied research and basic research.

The purpose of applied research is to solve specific real-life problems. For instance, when promoting a new product in a new city, we must first understand people’s preferences and determine what advertising methods can attract the masses.

The purpose of basic research is to explore new knowledge. For example, investigating how people from different cultural backgrounds in various countries use mobile phones in public areas. We can achieve this by formulating and validating hypotheses and utilizing relevant theories to explain the potential occurrences of phenomena.
