MARCUS O’DONNELL: Welcome back to week two of this course on building and evidencing your self-management skills. By now, you will have heard from a range of employers why they think self-management is a core career capability in today’s workforce. You will also have had some time to begin to reflect on what your own strengths and weaknesses are in self-management skills. Last week, we ended by thinking through some of the ways you might evidence the skills you already have. This week, we’ll dive a little deeper into these skills, and look of practical strategies you can adopt to build your self-management capabilities.
We’ll look at different ways we can adjust our mindsets to reframe some of the habitual ways we might inhibit our own success. Like other career or life skills such as communication, problem solving, teamwork, self management isn’t a single thing. It’s a bundle of different capacities that we bring together to motivate and lead ourselves to our next challenge. In a world that continues to change and change fast, that’s a key skill we all need. At the beginning of this course, I asked you to think about what you wanted to get out of this course, and to set up a plan to achieve that goal. How did that go for you?
Now is a good time to review how you went last week, and to adjust your goals in the light of what you found out. Was your goal realistic? Did you get what you expected? Our life and our career goals need to be rethought and refocused as we adapt and change to new circumstances. This is true of the big decisions and the small ones. We need to make the most of transition points to evaluate our performance and readjust our goals. So what do you want to get from the rest of the course? And what will you do to make this happen?

Self-management is not just about motivation.
As we learnt last week, it’s an important part of performing our roles at work effectively, and taking care of our professional and personal wellbeing.
So what are the key skills involved in self-management and how can we improve our capabilities?

What you’ll be learning

This week we’ll explore the key capabilities associated with effective self-management in the workplace, and discuss some practical strategies to improve your self-management.
Next, to get a better idea of where your self-management stands, we’ll reflect on our existing self-management capabilities before exploring ways of evidencing these to current or potential employers.
By working through each step, not only will you have a better idea about the level of your current skills, but you should also be able to identify your strengths and any gaps you need to work on.
At the end of the week, you should be able to formulate a plan that maps out how you’ll apply your key learnings from this course to enhance your self-management skills and reach your set goals.
