Answering the big questions

At the beginning of this course, we set out to answer two big questions:

• What is self-management and why does it matter for my employability?
• What self-management skills do I have and how can I most effectively demonstrate these to employers?

By now, you should have developed some very personal answers to these questions. Hopefully the material we’ve explored together in this course has contributed to your thinking.

What we covered

In Week 1, we examined how the world of work is changing and what this means in terms of a growing emphasis on key transferable skills like self-management.We heard different perspectives about the importance of self-management and the skills it entails from employers, employees and your education team.You also had the opportunity to benchmark your self-management skills against formal qualifications frameworks and criteria.In Week 2, we learned about self-management as self-leadership, and the importance of self-awareness and reflection. Taking stock of the patterns in our lives, seeking feedback and cultivating awareness allows us to better develop in both our professional and personal lives.You also had the opportunity to create an action plan for your self-management going forward, and to develop a pitch to evidence you self-management skills to employers.
