Fighting for the future you want

Read a short text that conveys the idea that a better future is only possible if we all take action.

We’ve seen that climate change is already having devastating impacts on our communities and ecosystems.

But we’ve also seen that a much better future is also possible – a future where we have averted climate breakdown and improved our lives and societies.

Which future we get depends on the actions and choices we make now. But creating this better future isn’t as simple as just voting for it – it requires collective effort and action. As things are now, we are on a path toward climate breakdown. Getting off this path will require rapid, far-reaching changes at all levels from individuals, communities, corporations, cities, nations and international diplomacy.

But it will also involve transforming major sectors like energy, agriculture, transport, and industry, as well as our institutions, technology, and cultural norms. Everyone, everywhere has a role to play.

Experience from the last 50 years indicates that we can’t rely on governments and businesses to lead the way. Many governments and businesses have failed to act decisively, and some have actively delayed change. That’s why we must take initiative in our own contexts – in our families, communities, workplaces, schools, sports clubs, faith groups, political parties – and push for stronger action wherever we can.

So many changes are needed and so many people are needed to make these changes happen. It’s therefore crucial that we are not ‘just’ working against something terrible but also towards something desirable and that we’re also having fun on the way.

In order to take meaningful action towards effective and impactful change, it’s important to fully understand the problem. We need to explore how we got here, what’s driving the crisis, and what obstacles stand in the way. That’s exactly what you’ll do in the next activity.
