The power of imagination and longing

Watch a video with Dr Rob Hopkins on the power of imagination and longing as an enabler of change.

We’ve seen that inspiration can be a powerful mobiliser for change. But to inspire people, it’s crucial to offer an inspiring vision of what we are fighting for, not just what we’re fighting against.

In this video, Transition movement co-founder Dr Rob Hopkins highlights the importance of imagining a positive future as a crucial step for making that future happen.

Making the future irresistible

“If the way we talk about a low-carbon future doesn’t make it sound delicious and irresistible and abundant and gorgeous, then why is anyone going to want to do that? We’re only going to go there if it feels like we’re moving towards something irresistible rather than being dragged away from something irreplaceable.”
Rob Hopkins, co-founder of the Transition movement
If imagining a positive future and sharing those positive visions is a crucial step in bringing about the change we need, then let’s do it.
Let’s imagine a world where we have averted climate breakdown. Beyond the absence of catastrophe, what would make that future “delicious and irresistible” for you?

Have your say

Imagine three things that would make this future really exciting to live in. How can life in the future be better, fairer, more fulfilling, and more fun?
If you need some inspiration, consider the following questions:
  • What would places look, feel, smell or sound like?
  • What would the atmosphere be like?
  • How would people interact?
  • How would we spend our time?
What would happen to the things that currently make life sometimes difficult, stressful or uncomfortable?

If you feel like it, you can also discuss these ideas with your friends, family or colleagues. These conversations can be really fun and inspiring. And who knows, maybe they will even spark ideas for what you could do together to help create this “irresistible” future?
