Examples of actions

Explore examples of actions and campaigns in companies, universities and schools then discuss which of these you find most meaningful and inspiring.

In this activity, we’ve explored the pivotal role businesses, universities, and schools play in addressing the climate crisis. These institutions are uniquely positioned to drive systemic change by rethinking their operations, facilities and products.

Let’s look at some inspiring real-world initiatives demonstrating how some of them are already stepping up to reduce their emissions.

Patagonia

Patagonia, a global outdoor apparel company, is a pioneering example of how even a large, competitive business can orient itself towards serving first and foremost a social or ecological purpose. Patagonia is, in its own words, “in business to protect our home planet”. Specifically, Patagonia is committed to sustainable materials, fair labour practices, repairing rather than replacing gear, and encouraging customers to buy only what they truly need. And perhaps most importantly, the company devotes 1% of its sales and 98% of its profits exclusively to support climate action and environmental protection.

Patagonia thus largely acts like a not-for-profit business (using profits for social or ecological purpose rather than for enriching shareholders), even though it is technically a for-profit business. Indeed, Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard wants to use the company to change the way business is done in general:

“If we could do the right thing while making enough to pay the bills, we could influence customers and other businesses, and maybe change the system along the way.”

MONDRAGON Corporation (Spain)

The MONDRAGON Corporation, based in Spain, is the world’s largest worker cooperative and a model of sustainable business practices. Comprising over 80,000 worker-owners across diverse industries, MONDRAGON prioritises job creation, environmental responsibility and social well-being. The cooperative has invested in renewable energy projects and eco-friendly manufacturing, showing how democratically run businesses can successfully balance wellbeing with sustainability.

The Lucas Plan (United States)

In the 1970s, workers at Lucas Aerospace suggested converting military production to socially useful products like wind turbines. The Lucas Plan illustrates how workers, by organising collectively and taking initiative, can guide companies to shift from high-carbon, harmful activities to ones that prioritise sustainability or societal needs.

Project Drawdown (global)

Project Drawdown is a leading non-profit focused on identifying and promoting practical, science-based solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Their comprehensive research highlights key actions, from scaling renewable energy to empowering communities worldwide to tackle climate change. Through publications, tools and partnerships, Project Drawdown has become a critical resource for policymakers, businesses, and grassroots movements seeking to align their climate action efforts with proven solutions for a sustainable future.

Green School Bali

Green School Bali is an eco-friendly school that was founded in 2008 in Bali, Indonesia. It focuses on a holistic education combining mental, physical and emotional learning. The school’s bamboo buildings are energy-efficient, using renewable energy sources like solar power. Students learn about sustainability through hands-on projects in areas like organic farming, waste management and renewable energy. The model of Green School Bali has inspired schools worldwide to integrate sustainability into their teaching and facilities.

GLS Bank (Germany)

GLS Bank is a customer-owned cooperative bank in Germany, devoted to investing in social and ecological projects. Founded in 1974, GLS Bank is Germany’s first ethical bank, with a focus on sustainability. Customers of the GLS Bank can choose which projects their money should be invested in, from renewable energy to education to solidarity economy projects.
Customers can also invest their money into shares of the bank, which makes them members of the cooperative and gives them the rights to participate and vote in the bank’s decision making. The bank categorically excludes investments into fossil fuels, nuclear energy, weapons, or industrial livestock farming. GLS Bank is also a founding member of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, which encourage banks to address social and environmental issues.

Science for the People (global)

Science for the People (SftP) is a movement that brings together scientists, activists and educators to use science as a tool for social and environmental justice. By challenging the dominance of corporate and political power in scientific fields, SftP advocates for research that serves the needs of marginalised communities and promotes sustainable uses of science for all. They famously work with student, community, Indigenous and labour groups on various climate justice initiatives like fossil fuel divestment and energy democracy.
