Your vision for a better future 3

You will write 100-150 words outlining your vision of how society’s goals, logic, narratives, and structures will have changed in 10 years' time.

In this third visioning exercise, you’re invited to imagine a world 10 years from now where society has successfully shifted towards a more desirable future.

Building on what you’ve learned about communication and climate policy hotspots this week, envision how society’s goals, logics, narratives, and structures have changed, particularly in relation to technology, economic growth, jobs, livelihoods and finance.

In 10 years, what will life look and feel like? How will it be different from today?

Step 1: Envision the future

Take a moment to reflect, then write a short text (100–150 words) describing your future vision for these important aspects of society. If you prefer, you can also present your vision artistically through a drawing, sketch, infographic, or visual concept. Feel free to express your ideas in a way that feels inspiring to you.

Focus on the aspects that excite you most! What makes this future vibrant, thriving, and “delicious”? Be bold and creative, and don’t feel constrained by today’s norms.

Here are a few guiding questions to help you imagine this future:

Goals

  • What does society value most?
  • What do people do with their time?
  • How are decisions made, and what guides them?

Narratives

  • What are the dominant stories people tell about life, success, and purpose?
  • How are we talking about the climate crisis?
  • What ideas or phrases have replaced today’s dominant narratives (for example, what has replaced “we need economic growth at all costs”)?

Technology

  • How does society view technology, and what role does it play in daily life?
  • How does technology support sustainability and wellbeing?
  • Which new or old technologies are used and which current technologies are no longer used?

Jobs and livelihoods

  • What types of work are common?
  • What’s the role of work in society?
  • Are people working more or less than now?
  • Do people need a paid job to secure their livelihood – and who provides these jobs?

Finance

  • What purpose are loans and investments serving?
  • What kind of projects get funded?
  • Do we still have private banks?
  • How do they align with tackling the climate crisis?

Step 2: Share and discuss

Once your vision is complete, share it with other learners as follows:

  • If you have created an image to represent your vision, share it on the Padlet.
  • If you have created your vision in writing, share it in the Comments section below.

You can comment on and discuss other learners’ visions by selecting ‘Add comment’ on the Padlet, or by selecting ‘Reply’ in the Comments section.
