Imagining how a better future will come about

Watch a video that introduces the concept of back-casting and how it can be used to create an action plan.

The visions you have developed throughout this course of what a flourishing, low-carbon, socially just future could look like are just the first step. How do you actually get there? This is where backcasting comes in.

Watch this video by Alex Magnin, which explains how backcasting can help us to think strategically in creating a roadmap to a sustainable future.

Backcasting is a powerful method for turning visions into actionable plans. The idea is to start with the future you want to create and work backwards to identify the steps needed to achieve it. Unlike forecasting, which projects the future based on current trends, backcasting opens up the possibility that the future is fundamentally different from the present. It allows for transformative change rather than incremental change.

Looking ahead

In the next steps, you’ll use backcasting to identify the stepping stones that can get us from today’s challenges to the better future you envisioned. This will allow you to come up with a roadmap and action plan that sets out what you can do to help realise your own vision of the future. You can play an active part in turning the world you live in into the world you want to live in.
