Summary

A summary of key points from Week 3.

In Week 3, you explored some of the most critical aspects of climate communication and policy debates.

You considered how to communicate effectively about the climate crisis, engage with hot debates around climate policy and respond to misleading arguments and delay discourses.

You began by exploring the importance of climate communications, and learning from communication experts about tips, tricks and best practices for effective communication. You examined how different framings can inspire effective action, addressed common mental barriers that prevent people from engaging with the crisis, and explored the unique power of the arts in moving people emotionally and intuitively.

Building on these communication skills, you examined some of the important debates in climate policy. Using a fictitious opinion piece containing misleading claims, you explored a range of issues, such as the promises and limits of technology, the role of economic growth, the need for a just transition and the costs of climate mitigation versus the costs of inaction. These discussions allowed you to critically analyse common claims while envisioning policies and collective actions that could lead to transformative change.

Next, you examined the concept of delay discourses – arguments that recognise the reality of climate change but seek to slow or weaken the response to it. Through a structured approach, you learned to identify these discourses, understand their implications, and develop effective counterarguments.

The week culminated in an exercise where you applied your learning to respond to the opinion piece. By analysing and addressing its flawed claims, you crafted arguments that not only dismantle misleading discourses but also advocate for meaningful and just climate action.

Throughout Week 3, you continued your visioning journey, imagining how transformative changes in policy and societal action could create a more sustainable and equitable world. You will further develop and use your visions for the future in Week 4.

You have now gained the skills to navigate complex debates, communicate persuasively, and challenge misleading narratives, empowering you to be active participants in advocating and shaping the climate solutions your world urgently needs.
