MA in Comparative Literatures and Cultures
We live in a world that is more globalized and interconnected than ever before. Many of us have travelled to or lived in countries that we were not born in. We read books, watch TV and films and encounter art in languages and from cultural spaces that are very different from our own. At the University of Bristol we think that it is vitally important to understand these encounters between cultures. Our MA in Comparative Literatures and Cultures will allow you to develop critical skills, such as cultural theory, critical reading and research, that will enable you to study cultures and literatures in comparison across a wide variety of contexts.
You’ll learn how cultures develop, how they become part of a nation’s character, and how different cultures flex and change as they come into contact with each other and are translated and appropriated across borders. The MA is based in Bristol’s School of Modern Languages, which is home to specialists working on a wide variety of cultural contexts, from the medieval period
to the modern day: from Russia, to Europe, to Latin America and Africa.
Our core teaching is conducted in English, but you will also have the opportunity to study a language, either from scratch or at an advanced level, and to work with materials in foreign languages. As graduates of this MA, you will be able to enter the workforce, or go on to further study, as intercultural critics, linguistic experts and global citizens who are best placed to understand and respond to new global challenges. Please have a look at our website to find out more about the kind of courses we offer and to learn how studying with us can open up a whole new world.
If you’ve been inspired by this course we’d like to invite you to pursue further study with us. The University of Bristol MA in Comparative Literatures and Cultures offers the chance to continue your study of cultures and literatures at an advanced level. Watch our video to find out more.
