Floating car data in Bangkok

In this unit, we explore how Bangkok is leveraging real-time data and innovative technologies to tackle its notorious traffic congestion.

With traffic-related costs estimated at $15-$22 billion annually, effective congestion management is critical for the city’s economy, safety, and environment. We dive into how Bangkok uses Floating Car Data and PTV Flows, a cloud-based solution, to monitor traffic patterns and optimise traffic flow in real time.

PTV Flows aggregate GPS data from vehicles, mobile apps, and connected cars to create a dynamic picture of the city’s traffic conditions. This data is then used to predict traffic congestion up to 60 minutes ahead, enabling proactive management through adjustments in traffic signals, incident response, and route recommendations.

The ability to manage traffic with less reliance on expensive hardware makes this an ideal solution for emerging cities. In the next unit, we move to Hong Kong and understand how public transport data is being used to improve bus driving behaviour and enhance service efficiency.
