Singapore LTA DataMall Case Study

In this unit, we explore the Singapore DataMall, a pioneering initiative by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) that exemplifies Singapore’s status as a global leader in smart city innovation.

Launched in 2011 and revamped in 2018, the DataMall is a comprehensive data platform hosting over 4,000 datasets from 68 government agencies. It provides both static and real-time data on transportation, public services, and more—accessible for free to all users.

The DataMall was designed with three key objectives:

  • Improving urban mobility
  • Promoting innovation
  • Enhancing public services

This platform enables businesses, researchers, and developers to create innovative applications that enhance everyday life. Examples include journey planners, bike-sharing services, parking apps, and crowd density monitors. With over 10,000 subscribers and 800 million monthly API requests, the DataMall fosters collaboration and co-creation while supporting Singapore’s economy and public services.

This case study shows how open data governance and accessibility can unlock transformative urban solutions, benefitting citizens and visitors alike.
