Sigma Notation Part 1

Now that we understand that (X) represents a column of data, let’s take a look at how we can perform operations on the data that is represented by (X).

In statistics, the most common symbol you’re going to come across is the symbol for Sigma:
(Sigma)

Sigma is a basic instruction that tells you to add up data. Sigma means sum.

Using our table of ages, we could perform the following operation:
(Sigma (X) = 30 + 21 + 59 + 45)
(therefore Sigma (X) = 155)
