SPEAKER 1: An emerging problem is orthorexia nervosa. A lot of people might have heard of anorexia nervosa or bulimia. And orthorexia nervosa is linked to those conditions, but one of the differences is that people aren’t often focused on their weight, like they would be for anorexia or bulimia. However, it still is an obsession with food. And orthorexia nervosa is an obsession with healthy eating. So something that should be healthy actually becomes unhealthy. So one of the problems with this is that people place their food in nutrition above all else, and it starts to take over their life. Sometimes, depending on what kind of diet they’re following, it might mean that they’re missing essential nutrients.

But I think the saddest thing about this is it’s effect on people’s self-esteem, and their effect on their family and friends. So, if you think that you might have a problem with orthorexia nervosa, or one of your friends or family members does, then perhaps you can seek advice from your health care professional.
