Story – Episode 5: João’s family

Vocabulary: family members.

 

1. We suggest that you play the video twice. First listen and don’t follow the subtitles. Then play it again, follow the subtitles and repeat after each sentence.

 

2. Notice the following:

(1) The difference between e and é.

Example:

O Fernando e a Sofia são os pais do João. = Fernando and Sofia…

O Fernando é o pai do João. = Fernando is

e = and

é: from verb ser (Ele é)

(2) How is ser used with one person and more than one person?

Example:

O Fernando é o pai do João. = Fernando is João’s father.

O Fernando e a Sofia são os pais do João. = Fernando and Sofia are João’s parents.

(3) How are da and do used in the sentences?

Observe these examples:

A Maria é a avó do João. = Maria is João’s grandmother.

O Fernando é o marido da Sofia. = Fernando is Sofia’s husband.

This is how they work:

  • da for feminine: da Juliana = Juliana’s
  • do for masculine: do João = João’s

Here are the other sentences from the video.

O Osvaldo e a Maria são os avós do João.

O Fernando é o pai do João.

A Sofia é a mãe do João.

O Fernando e a Sofia são os pais do João.

A Sofia é a esposa do Fernando.
