Welcome to the second COG-Train Course

Introduction to the second course of the series
16.8
Hello. I’m Professor Sharon Peacock. Welcome to the course on behalf of COG-Train, the global training arm of the COVID-19 Genomics UK consortium, or COG-UK. This course is focused on sampling for disease tracking and characterization in a pandemic. Sampling and testing are key to understanding where a disease is spreading. In the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of samples taken, analysed, tracked, and shared have far exceeded any previous pandemic. Conducting national and multinational testing for SARS-CoV-2 is a monumental challenge. This has led to state of the art innovations in sample tracking and data collection. You will follow the journey of a sample, from the swab to the processed data, used by experts in the pandemic response.

We will discuss how to share data across teams and internationally, together with the ethical and practical implications of using mass data on a pandemic scale. I hope you enjoy the course.

Welcome! This is the second of five courses that aim to cover genomic aspects of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus analysis and pandemic preparedness. COG-Train is a partnership between COG-UK and Wellcome Connecting Science to provide training on SARS-CoV-2 genomics.

What will be covered in the next three weeks?

  • In Week 1 we will talk about the pathway of a COVID-19 testing sample, sampling strategies and how to implement and upscale testing and sequencing.
  • In Week 2 you will discover what metadata is, the best practices to collect this type of data, why data enrichment is important and the challenges and requirements to obtain rich metadata.
  • Finally, in Week 3 you will learn how to ethically share different types of data and the measurements to fairly acknowledge international collaboration.

Post in the comments what your expectations are about the course. We would also like to know if you have attended our previous course The Power of Genomics to Understand the COVID-19 Pandemic
