Activity 2: Overview

Designers need to understand what will happen to the product they are designing when it goes through the various stages of its life cycle.

In this activity, you will study the life cycle of engineering products and examine how each stage in this life cycle can influence decisions and choices made by designers during the design process.

Designers need to understand what will happen to the product they are designing when it goes through the various stages of its life cycle. A thorough understanding of these phases will affect the designer’s decisions during the design phase.

This activity starts by introducing you to the lifecycle of engineering products. You will learn that each product will go through five stages or phases:

  • design
  • manufacture
  • marketing
  • usage
  • disposal.

You will cover the first stage – design – in the next activity and concentrate for now on the other four phases. As previously said, it is important to have an understanding of these phases as it will affect the designer’s decisions during the design phase.
