Activity 5: Overview

Dive into the world of engineering design with insights on the product lifecycle and conceptual design. Start learning now!
Group of engineers maintaining a solar panel.

In previous activities you learned how to develop solutions to design problems. In particular, you learned the steps of the conceptual design process, and how to find and evaluate different concepts for a new product.

In this activity, you will apply what you have learned to design a solar tracking apparatus that can rotate a solar panel so that it faces the sun throughout the day. In this activity you will:

  • look at the design brief
  • study the requirements of this apparatus
  • develop a function structure for the envisaged apparatus
  • discuss with your peers what a designer would need to do next; this activity will enable you to apply some of your learning from earlier activities.

Learning objectives

By the end of this activity, you will be able to:

  • Practice conceptual design activities with the help of case study.
