Chatbots as study assistants

In this video, Aggie Molnar discusses some key considerations when using chatbots as study assistants: relevance, pedagogy and ethics.

In the previous step, you learned about the PAIR framework as a proactive approach to integrating AI in to course work, learning and module design. Can you recall what the letters in PAIR stand for?

In this step, you will watch a video introducing you to some key considerations when using chatbots as study assistants. In the video, you will think about three perspectives on the use of chatbots:

  1. relevance
  2. pedagogy
  3. ethics.

We will increasingly find chatbots integrated into our learning environments. These will have been trained on the course materials and key ideas relevant to the subjects being studied. However, we can of course already use existing tools, Like Bing Chat and ChatGPT, as chatbot study assistants, so long as we are alert to their limitations.

Hopefully, once you have completed this step, you will feel equipped with some strategies for how to best use chatbots as study assistants for your own learning or when teaching students. In the next step, you will be asked what you think might happen as educational chatbots improve: do you think robots will eventually replace teachers?
