SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources

We will explore SDG14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources through WHO's website.
Before we start, we would like you to take a look at the UN’s webpage explaining SDG 14, Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources

The objective of Goal 14 is to safeguard and appropriately employ marine resources, oceans, and seas. These areas are crucial for human survival and the existence of life on the planet. They span 70 percent of the Earth’s surface and supply essential resources such as food, energy, and water. Additionally, the ocean absorbs approximately 25% of annual global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which helps to mitigate climate change and its adverse impacts. Despite their importance, the oceans and seas are facing a perilous situation due to human actions, jeopardizing the largest ecosystem on the planet and the livelihoods of billions of individuals.

Review questions:

  • What are the goals of SDG 14 and how do they aim to improve the health and productivity of oceans and marine ecosystems?
  • What are some of the major challenges facing the implementation of SDG 14, particularly with respect to preventing marine pollution and overfishing?
  • How can governments and international organizations work together to promote sustainable management of marine resources, particularly in small island developing states and least-developed countries?
  • How does SDG 14 relate to other sustainable development goals, such as those focused on climate action and biodiversity conservation?
