Autonomy vs agency

Autonomy vs agency

In our exploration of identity and its place within systems, it will help to define the terms ‘autonomy’ and ‘agency’.

The video in this step explores how autonomy and agency are shaped by systems. We’ll explore systems and systems thinking more in the next section; for now, think of systems thinking as an approach to studying complex entities (i.e. systems). This approach emphasises studying how the parts of the system relate to each other and the whole. It is these relations among identities that shape agency and autonomy.

Share your thoughts

Watch the video in this step for an overview and example. Consider your own conceptions of autonomy and agency. How would you define them? Share how you conceptualise autonomy and agency with someone else in your community. Is there agreement about who has agency or autonomy?
