Introduction

Whether you’re currently applying for a job, or are thinking about your next steps, it’s always good to have some knowledge of what to expect.

My name is Charlie and I work as a Career Consultant, on behalf of the University of York. It’s great to have you here with me, and I’m looking forward to taking you through the lessons on this course over the next two weeks.

As a result of this course, you will:

  • Recognise different recruitment and selection activities used by employers and know how to succeed in them
  • Understand how to use social media effectively when applying for roles, and how to create and utilise your LinkedIn profile to stand out to potential employers
  • Learn how to create persuasive CVs, cover letters, and online profiles to stand out to potential employers and showcase skills, experiences and achievements
  • Know how to positively explain gaps in CVs when required
  • Develop ‘commercial awareness’, understand why it’s important and know how to demonstrate commercial awareness in job applications
  • Identify key competencies on job adverts and how recruiters assess competencies in all parts of the recruitment process
  • Become familiar with essential interview techniques
  • Recognise how AI is used within recruitment and understand the ethical debate around recruiters and candidates using AI
