Going into an interview feeling confident can be difficult as you (usually) don’t know what questions will be asked of you. However, there are some ways to ‘predict’ what questions may come up.

Read the job description

The first step is reading the job description. It’s good practice to make sure you save a copy of this to refer to at later stages, as normally the job page is removed after it closes. The job description gives you lots of hints as to what interviewers might ask you in the final interview, it’s up to you to identify what these might be. Let’s use an example to show you how. Imagine you’ve applied for a job as a graduate finance professional at an engineering company. The job description is below:

What you’ll need:

  • A degree in a finance-related subject, or a degree that involves mathematics (e.g. a STEM subject)

What’s more, you’ll need to be:

  • Someone who enjoys working with numbers and is curious to delve into them and unpick what they tell us
  • Someone who can ask questions and interrogate data
  • Curious about the world of finance and eager to excel within it
  • A person with strong team-working and people skills.

Looking at the keywords in the second section, you can pick out some key skills/requirements. These could be:

  • Someone who enjoys working with numbers and is curious to delve into them and unpick what they tell us
  • Someone who can ask questions and interrogate data
  • Curious about the world of finance and eager to excel within it
  • A person with strong team-working and people skills.
