A note about the categorisation of robotics jobs

We categorise robotics jobs as software related roles, hardware related roles or research related roles.
As you navigate through the robotics industry, you will come across some ‘standard’ role titles. You will see titles like Robotics Software Engineer, Robotics Mechatronics Engineer, Robotics Technician, and so on. However, these titles are quite vague and specific to the company or the industry you are getting in. Don’t be fooled by job titles!

Therefore, this course will take a different approach and instead of talking about specific role titles, which differ from company to company, it will focus on high-level job specifications. It is important that you understand which high-level job specification suits you more.

The categorisations used in this course about are:

  1. software related roles.
  2. hardware related roles.
  3. research related roles.

Would you rather be involved with software development, or are you more hands-on with hardware? Do you prefer a technician job where you will troubleshoot issues and fix things? Identifying which major category you naturally fall into will help you narrow down the specific role you want to get in.

Then how would I know what specific job to look for?

Once you clarify which major category you would likely want to be involved with, then your job is to search for opportunities in that space. You can search for the keyword and look at different opportunities. Have a closer look at the job description. If you find something interesting, and you progress to interviews, don’t hesitate to ask clarification questions about what the job entails!

So let’s start by looking at software related roles.
