As well as learning to program, developers need to understand the ethical dimensions of software development and the legal landscape that shapes this industry. In this activity, you will find out about some of the other skills which are important to be a good software developer, particularly those which are helpful for ethical development, and understanding the laws which are useful to know as a developer.

You will explore what ‘intellectual property’ is in software development and why it is significant for developers.  You will also find out about three strategies to make software accessible to users with different needs.  Finally, you will think about which resources to use to practice programming tasks.

  • Discuss some of the challenges in software development, including social, legal and ethical concerns.
  • Describe the range of roles within software development and the different skill profiles needed to succeed.
