The differences between 通过 and 经过

通过 and 经过 both can indicate the attainment of a certain goal via somebody or by means of something. For example:

通过调查我们发现，大家最关心的问题是工作时间。

也可以说: 经过调查我们发现，大家最关心的问题是工作时间。

通过三个月的努力，玛丽的数学成绩提高了很多。

经过三个月的努力，玛丽的数学成绩提高了很多。

Differences:

通过 is a preposition, and 经过 is a verb. Semantically speaking, 通过 emphasises the method or means of achieving something; while 经过emphasises the process. For example:

学校希望通过这次活动引起大家的兴趣。(强调学校用活动的方法引起大家的兴趣)

经过一次次失败之后，他终于成功了。(前半句强调的是他失败的过程)

When used as a verb, 通过 means to pass through someplace from one end (or side) to another end (or side), while 经过 means to go to somewhere by way of some place without the meaning of passing through. For example:

这里正在修路，汽车无法通过，只能走路通过。

我下班经过超市，顺便去买了点儿东西。

经过 can also be used as a noun to indicate the development process of something; while 通过 has no such usage. For example:

麦克把事情的经过告诉了我，原来这件事真的跟你没有关系。
