Summary of Week 1.

Well done – you have completed Week 1.

In the first week of the course, we have identified some key terminology and definitions and linked these to current legislation. 

We have explored the meaning of SEN and Disability, identified two key models of disability (the medical model and the social model) and considered how they define disability in different ways. We have also identified some current legislation, such as the SEND Code of Practice 2014 and the Equality Act 2010, and considered how these relate to key concepts such as reasonable adjustments.

You have been introduced to our four characters, George, Vinita, Holly and Akia, who illustrate the different types of SEND needs and the richness and complexity of the experiences of individuals with SEND needs.

In Week 2, we will explore George and Vinita’s lives, experiences and needs in more detail in order to deepen our understanding of different areas of SEND and SEND needs.
